Coconut water is truly an amazing natural drink! As Summer kicks in hydration is the key. If you arent a big fan of coconuts but still chug on sugary store-bought electrolyte drinks then read below and make a change now! Our naturopath explains:
Coconut water is similar in composition to human blood plasma and has been used intravenously to hydrate critically ill patients in emergency situations. It is a fantastic natural alternative to sugary sports drinks, which are essentially soft drinks without the bubbles.
Sports drinks are acid forming, full of artificial flavours and colouring, synthetic vitamins, high fructose corn syrup, sodium and can contain up to 18 teaspoons of sugar! This sugar hit spikes blood and can give temporary feelings of increased energy only to drop you into an abyss wanting another hit.
These drinks are contributing to diabetes and obesity, often getting youth addicted at a dangerous stage of development and growth. Water is the best thing to drink for hydration, but coconut water is one of the highest natural sources of electrolytes and is composed of 95% water.
Coconut water is a complete electrolyte formula, containing potassium, sodium, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, so important when exercising to relieve muscle cramping and missing from nearly all processed sports drinks. It is low in sugar, nearly fat free, rich in natural vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients and cytokinins and is alkalising on the tissues of the body.
