Sponsored Rider of the Month: Jessie Rice-Ward

This monthss sponsored rider of the month is the current Australian Junior Showjumping Champion, Jessica Rice-Ward.

When and how did you start riding?

I was 2 years old. My mother competed as well so she introduced me.

What do you love most about riding and working with horses?

I love the factor of working with an unpredictable animal. The friendship and bond you can build with one another is so loving!

What skills, abilities and training do you need to succeed in your chosen discipline?

Hard work, determination, positively and sportsmanship.

What do you consider your biggest equestrian achievement to date?

Either Most Successful Junior rider at Sydney Royal 2016, NSW Junior Champion 2016 or Australian Junior Champion 2016.

What is your favourite competition memory?

Most defiantly jumping double clear in the Junior Final at Australian Championships now knowing that I was the new title holder. Cantering around the arena to music with the crowd screaming is always a good feeling for sure!

Tell us a little about your current competition horses

Kiwi Guard aka. Hemi is a chestnut, 15.2hh, 14yo Irish Sport Horse who we imported from New Zealand in 2013. Bonaventure aka. Gully is a bay, 16.2hh, 20yo OTT. Gypsie Queen aka. Gypsie is a paint, 15.1hh, 14yo Clydesdale cross. Cutawang Cruiser aka. Cecil is a bay, 16.1hh, 18yo OTT and lastly the best pony, JFK aka. Snowy is a flaxen chestnut, 14.1hh, 15yo Australian Riding pony x Stock horse.

What is your goal for them over the next 12 months?

I am eligible to compete in young rider classes next year so I am hoping to be successful in those classes throughout the year!

If someone wanted to follow a similar journey to you what tips would you offer them?

Dont compare yourself to others and what they are doing, run your own race.

What advice would you would you give to your younger self?

Hard work and dedication builds you more than talent does.

Besides riding horses, what else are you passionate about?

I love playing netball but I realized after a year of playing on a team I was to busy to play. Nowadays I still play on my schools representative teams.
