Australia Day is a day we come together as a nation to celebrate whats great about being Australian, from our many achievements to our diverse society and landscape. For many of us, Australia Day means the smell of salty beach air, roaring barbecues, breathtaking views, family time, road trips or a combination of all of the above.
If you want to join the fun on Australia Day (and who doesnt!) here are a few ideas on things to do with family and friends:
Visit the beach
Australia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and the best part is that they are absolutely free to visit, making it an extremely popular destination nationwide. Organise a picnic, some beach sports, or simply spend the day relaxing with family and friends but dont forget to stay hydrated throughout the day and be sure to slip, slop, slap on some sunscreen.
Play a game of cricket
Whether it is in the backyard or on the beach, cricket is the unofficial national past time. Grab your mates, a set of cheap stumps and the cricket bat which has been sitting in your garage since last year, and enjoy a few innings and a good laugh.
Throw a Barbeque
It doesnt get more Australian than a backyard BBQ on Australia Day. While shrimp and snags are a popular Aussie feast, the options are practically endless! Mix it up with some grilled veggies and salads, different cuts of meat or fish anything goes!
Watch a fireworks display
Australians love a spectacular fireworks display and some of the biggest and best are on Australia Day. From Federation Square in Melbourne, Sydney Harbour in Sydney to the Parklands at South Bank in Brisbane and Langley Park in Perth, there are some great spots to watch the a show.
You dont need to travel far to join in in the Australia Day fun. There are plenty of great activities happening all over the country and in every city on Australia Day, including citizenship ceremonies and variety of live entertainment.
